Communications- Phone calls

The «Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S. A.» (ETECSA), in English: Telecommunications Company of Cuba, is the government owned service provider for the entire island of Cuba. Their services include: Telephone, Internet, Wireless Internet, and Mobile Phone through their Cubacel branch. In varadero, the main ETECSA office is on Avenida 1 corner of Calle 30, and the main CUBACEL office is on Avenida 1 corner of Calle 42. ETECSA has also "MiniPuntos" (small service points) all over varadero.

Tourists can make phone calls from their hotels (charge to the room), but the most economical way is to use the blue public phones with pre-paid calling cards paid in CUC. You can buy these cards in hotels, ETECSA offices, airports, post offices, etc. They come in denominations of 5, 10 and 20 CUC. They can be used in the blue public phones (the ones that have the slot for the CUC prepaid cards) to make calls within Cuba or overseas. When you insert the card the remaining value is displayed and you can see it decrease as the call goes on.

Here are the costs when using a CUC Pre-Paid Calling card in a public phone:
- North, Central and South America (except Venezuela):  1.40 CUC per minute
- Venezuela:  1.00 CUC per minute
- Rest of the world:  1.50 CUC per minute
- Within Cuba: 0.05 to 1.00 CUC per minute (depending on distance)

There are two other types of public phones which are mainly used by the Cubans: The ones that accept pre-paid calling card paid in CUP (Cuban pesos or moneda nacional), these are for local calls and long-distance calls within Cuba; and the public phones that accept pesos coins only (CUP), these are for local calls only.

Canada Direct service

ETECSA provides a toll-free number 0800-CANDA (0800-22632) to Canadians who want to make a phone call from Cuba to Canada (or any other country) and have the call charged to their own phone account in Canada.

Mobile phones (cellular service)

Tourists and foreigners may be able to use their own cellphone in Cuba (with their own number). In order to be able to operate in the ETECSA Cubacel network, the phone must be unlocked and have the GMS 900MHz technology.  ETECSA have 349 roaming agreements in 143 countries, check with your provider. Currently there are no roaming agreements with U.S. cellphone carriers.  You can also rent a cellphone in Cuba or activate a prepaid temporary line with Cubacel to use your own phone.
