The north of the Hicacos Peninsula (where Varadero is located) is a prime game-fishing territory where sailfish, marlin, tuna, barracuda, swordfish, snapper and some more exotic species abound. Follow the passion of the famous writer Ernest Hemingway who was an avid fisherman and used inspiration from his numerous Cuba fishing trips to write his famous novel The Old Man and the Sea. The Hemingway Fishing Tournament has been held in Cuba in June since 1950.
Deep-sea fishing excursions usually depart from Marina Chapelin on a 33-foot motor yacht for a 4 to 8 hours tour, maximum 3 miles offshore, and with a maximum 6 persons per boat (4 fishermen + 2 companions). Each fish captured is measured, weighted and photographed.
